BARCELONA - GAUDÍ: COLÒNIA GUELL

After the two previous posts about La Casa Milà (or La Pedrera), I think that it could be interesting to speak about La Colònia Güell, which I visited some time ago.

La Colònia Güell is one of the greatest legacies in modernist architecture and urban design in Spain today. Built at the end of the 19th century, it comprises a factory area, a residential area and the Gaudí Church Crypt, one of the most representative works of Antoni Gaudí. Its buildings are outstanding for their spaciousness, formal beauty and simple shapes and volumes.

The Colònia Güell was founded in 1890 by Eusebi Güell, following the model of the industrial estates common of that time and was one of the largest industrial complexes in Catalonia, where the people worked, lived and learned.

Industrial estates were organized as social centres where the workers and their families lived around the factory. At the factory raw cotton was processed into high quality corduroy and velvet.

Church's Crypt

The crypt of the church of this industrial estate was a "lab" for Gaudí, as many of the complex architectural solutions the brilliant architect would latter apply in the Sagrada Familia were tested here, in this textile neighborhood.

Crypt of La Colonia Güell designed by Antoni GaudíThe current church of La Colònia Güell is actually the crypt of the modernist original design, but the lack of funds stopped its construction. Even though it was never finished, the Crypt, conceived by Gaudí, is considered one of the most important and surprising works in modern architecture

Environment around La Colònia Güell in BarcelonaThe Colònia Güell is surrounded by wheat-fields and pine-trees. The estate is integrated with the rural environment that gives character to the village

As I tried to explain in this post, the Colonia Güell is set in a prime industrial location close to Barcelona, estructured round and enclosing a superb environment with easy acces from the city center, airport and city public transport.

BARCELONA - MODERNISM OF GAUDI: INSIDE CASA MILA

In the previous post of Casa Milà, I said that I would try to enter this beautiful building that night. After a queue of almost two hours, I could enjoy the dreamlike rooftop, walk under the catenary arches of the attic, visit a period apartment and glance at the two courtyards of this amazing modernist building designed by the brilliant Antoni Gaudí. Of course, It was worth the wait.

Next, what I liked the most of our two-hour visit to La Casa Milà:

Rooftop of La Pedrera

BARCELONA - MODERNISM OF GAUDI: LA PEDRERA

Today, 14th may, it's La Nit dels Museus (Night of Museums) in Barcelona, as I explained in a previous post. There are a lot of museums which are opening their doors for free tonight from 7pm to 1am.

However I have already decided which one I will try to visit tonight: La Casa Mila, also known as La Pedrera. I say "I will try" because it's probably I will have to line up a long queue.

Located in the central Passeig de Gràcia of Barcelona, the Casa Milà or La Pedrera is the culmination of Antoni Gaudí’s career, designed as a modernist building tailored to the new social needs, without forgetting his main source of inspiration: nature and organic forms.

Next I would like to show you some pictures of this fantastic building.

Casa Milà or La PedreraBuilt between 1906 and 1912, the Casa Milà occupies an entire corner of the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona’s Eixample. Antoni Gaudí created an astonishing modernista style building, set out around two interior courtyards which provide the flats with ventilation and light

Chimneys and balconies of La PedreraCurved, sinuous forms are the main elements inside and outside La Pedrera, like chimneys and balconies

Balcony of La PedreraThe Casa Milà’s façade resembles the moving sea, the waves interacting with the seaweed-motifs on the wrought-iron balcony railings

Casa Milà designed by Antoni GaudíThree areas are open to the public: the dreamlike attic space, with is brick catenary arches; the rooftop, where the chimneys recall the silhouette of warriors rising up among the dunes of the desert; and finally a period apartment

In the end, and in spite of the queue, I would enter La Casa Milà. Clicking on the next link, you will find pictures of what impressed me most this visit to La Casa Milà or La Pedrera, as it's popularly known. Next, a sample of what I would see on the rooftop.

BARCELONA GOTHIC QUARTER: PLAÇA REIAL

In previous posts I have spoken about some peaceful and small squares inside the Barcelona Gothic Quarter, like:

Today I would like to show you another lovely square but, unlike the other ones, this square is quite large.

Located beside La Rambla, La Plaça Reial (Royal Square) is one of the beautiful places in the Barcelona Gothic Quarter. Built where previously there was a former Capuchin convent, the elegant ambiance of this porticoed square is accentuated by the fountain, streetlamps and palm trees. Besides, it's one of the more lively Barcelona’s spot, especially at night.

Nowadays, as well as its beauty, Plaça Reial is a busy nightlife hub, and the porticoes conceal restaurants, bars and some of Barcelona’s most popular nightspots. Without any doubt, one of the most charming places in Barcelona.

La Plaça Reial is a really worthy visiting place but you should be careful because of the presence of pickpockets and drunk people, especially at night, which are better to avoid. However, police is always near this square, so today it's a fairly safe place.

Besides, next you have some useful information:

BARCELONA LOCAL CUSTOM: TIPPING

Between posts about the Barcelona Gothic Quarter, I thought that it would be interesting to speak about Tipping in Barcelona. This way you won't have to spend an extra money if you don't want. Of course, if the service has been excellent, your tip will be welcome and grateful.

Tipping in Barcelona isn't mandatory

First of all, if you would like to go to a restaurant for dinner or lunch in Barcelona, it would be important to know that Tipping in not mandatory, unlike many countries in Europe. In Spain tipping is actually a reward for receiving a good service and you don’t have to tip at all if you don’t want. Apart from that, waiters have their salary and the tip is a small part of their incomes.

As an example, for a two person lunch in Barcelona, if the bill were 35€, a good tip would be 3€ approximately. However you can Tipping less or not Tipping at all if you consider that the service wasn't good enough.

Finally, I would like to recommend you some great restaurants I spoke about in a previous post. I'm sure you will Tipping there without any doubt.

SHOPPING IN BARCELONA: PORTAL DE L'ANGEL

After having spoken in the previous posts about nice churches and squares of the Barcelona Gothic Quarter like:

today I would like to talk about one of the shopping streets in the Gothic Quarter:

El Portal de l'Angel

First of all, I would like to explain that Barcelona citizens would prefer to go to the city center to buy clothes. Around Portal de l’Àngel, Portaferrisa and Pelayo streets, it is more likely to find a lot of fashion stores like Zara and Berskha. I recommend walking through this area, especially around its narrow streets belonging to the Gothic Quarter, where there are small shops with their own designs.

Walking along the pedestrian avenue of El Portal de l'Angel you will go from Plaça Catalunya to the cathedral square, if you turn to the left, or to Portaferrissa street if you turn to the right. It's a pleasant walk along this wide avenue because of the large number of interesting shops you will find on each side of this street.

El Portal de l' Angel shopping street in BarcelonaHere you can see the end of El Portal de l'Angel, where this avenue forks into Capellans street to the left and Cucurulla street to the right

El Portal de l'Angel (and Portaferrissa street) are actually two of the main shopping areas of Barcelona. Among the shops you can find along El Portal de L'Angel, the most popular are:

- Fashion Stores

As you can see, El Portal de l'Angel is not only a shopping street, it's a symbolic and nice avenue in Barcelona which leads you from the modern and lively part of the city to its peaceful and medieval heart.

Belonging to this modern side, Barcelona is nowadays the Mobile World Capital. For this reason in Portal de l'Angel is located the Mobile World Centre, where you can discover the latest in Mobile Telephony.
