BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA: MOSTAR AND POCITELJ

At 8 o'clock in the morning we were already in front of the parking of the Hotel Hilton Imperial. Shortly after arrived the guide and the other tourists and our excursion to Bosnia began. Following the coast road the guide explained all that we were seeing. We arrived at the first border with Bosnia near Neum, where we hardly stopped. The guide shows his Croatian identification and told to the policeman that we were Irish, Italian and Spanish.

Shortly after crossing the border, we stopped 15min in Neum for breakfast. The sea views from this place were nice. We crossed again the border to return to Croatia to continue our way.

Following the Neretva River we reached Metkovic, where is another border with Bosnia. There was a queue of 45 min according to the guide. As He knew another border with little traffic 20min drive from this place, we drove and crossed to Bosnia from this second place. The guide gave the passports to the officer, who gave them back a few minutes later after checking them.

In Bosnia Herzegovina we visited the following places:

-Neum

-Pocitelj
  • Hammam
  • Madrasa
  • Mosque
  • Clock Tower
  • Fortress

-Mostar
  • Stari Most
  • Bazaar
  • Hammam
  • Koski Mehmed pasha Mosque

After Neum we stopped in Pocitelj: a charming village of Ottoman origin with its mosque (rebuilt after being in ruins after the war), hammam, clock tower and madrassa (the 4 essential elements of an Ottoman town) and a castle on the top. If somebody had told me I was in Turkey , I would have believe him.

From Pocitely we drove to Mostar, where we arrived about 12:15 pm. The guide adviced us especially not to lose our passports, because then he couldn't help us. Here we give some suggestions and indications (to go up the minaret of the mosque, to watch a video in the library next to the Stari Most bridge) and told us that we had to come back at 15.30 pm.

We we spent three fantastic hours taking pictures of the Stari Most, going up to Minaret, visiting the Hammam and strolling the streets lined with souvenir shops. We still have time to have a drink in a bar next to the bridge before leaving. Mostar 's old town is lovely.

    CROATIA: HVAR AND KORKULA

At 9 am we bought tickets for the catamaran to Hvar that left at 11am from Split. Tickets have to be purchased on the same day, and you should buy them 2 hours before the departure of the Catamaran. We came back to our accommodation in Split (Hostel Peruzovic) for breakfast and check out.

We arrived at Hvar at approximately 1 pm, and the first thing we did was to try to buy the tickets for the Catamaran to Korkula leaving at 6pm in Jadrolinija 's office, located few meters from where the catamaran left us. We hadn't bought them before because we had to purchase them the same day (but on the islands since the previous day). Unfortunately they were sold out and we had to buy tickets for the Catamaran to Vela Luka at 16h and then take a bus to Korkula.

At 3 pm we had visited Hvar Town and swum at one of its beaches, but if we had been two more hours in Hvar, we would have had lunch quietly.

After 1h of Catamaran and 1h30 of Bus we arrived at 7pm at the town of Korcula. In the tourist office we were told that we had to buy tickets from GV lines Catamaran to Dubrovnik for the next day at 16h in Korkyra agency. We went there but they told us that until the following day in the morning at 9 am they didn't know if they would have tickets to sell. We signed on the waiting list. We had the number 26.

Then we went to our accommodation (Accomodation Drasko), located near the bus station and with great views of Korcula.

After resting a bit and buying at the supermarket the next day's breakfast, we went to dinner in Arsenal restaurant near the main gate of the city wall. Our first day in Korkula ended with a night walk around the old town.

At 9 am we were in the travel agency but then they told us that until 10am we wouldn't know anything. There were more people in our situation and the anger was growing. In the end they only sold 20 tickets. We complained about this situation and, finally, we decided to buy tickets for a bus shuttle for 20 € coming out at 13:45 to Dubrovnik. Luckily, this was also a good choice to get Dubrovnik.

In the end, at 10:30 am we were ready to visit Korcula (very very nice, like Dubrovnik but smaller) and at 12pm we enjoyed a refreshing swim in a beach of Korkula until the time to leave.

Two hours later, at 5:30 pm, we came to Dubrovnik. The driver kindly left us beside Pile Gate, where we had our accommodation. In the end, the shuttle arrived earlier and left us in Pile district. With the GV lines Catamaran we had arrived later and it had left us at the port, so we had to catch a bus to get Dubrovnik.

    CROATIA: SPLIT AND TROGIR

We started the day by going to a viewpoint on Marjan Hill from where we enjoyed a beautiful view of Split. Then we went to the bus station walking along the promenade, called Riva. At the bus station we bought tickets for Trogir, a town near Split which is World Heritage. The bus left at 10:30am and arrived at 11:15. We were about 2 hours walking through the streets and squares of this fantastic and well preserved town with lovely corners.

We went back to Split for having lunch. In the afternoon we went up the bell tower of the cathedral and visited the Diocletian Palace, within which lies the old city of Split. In the evening, after having dinner at a restaurant in Sperun Square, we came back to walk through the streets of Diocletian's Palace to enjoy its nightlife.
