BARCELONA: TREN DEL PARQUE DE CAN MERCADER

Una mañana soleada de domingo decidimos ir paseando al Parque de Can Mercader tras recordar una agradable mañana que pasamos allí con unos amigos hace algunos años.

Realmente no vivimos lejos. A unos 20 minutos caminando. Así que tras un agradable paseo llegamos al parque donde entramos desde Cornellà. Concretamente desde la zona de la Torre de la Miranda en el barrio de San Ildefonso.

Por la Avenida Principal del Parque de Can Mercader pasamos junto a un estanque donde había un pequeño puente metálico que lo atravesaba. Seguimos caminando entre palmeras hasta llegar al centro del parque donde se encuentra el Palau Can Mercader, el lago, el Bar-restaurante con terraza al aire libre y la Estación de Tren de Can Mercader.

Junto al Palau Can Mercader y la estación de tren de Can Mercader, en el lado contrario al de la piscina y el bar, se encuentra un lago rodeado de árboles con una terraza-mirador para relajarse junto a él. Este es para mí uno de los lugares más bonitos de este parque.

La Estación de Can Mercader es el punto de partida del recorrido del tren eléctrico construido por el Club d'Amics del Ferrocarril de Cornellà con el apoyo económico del Ayuntamiento de esta población.

Por los más de 800 metros de recorrido de la vía principal que recorre el parque circulan varios modelos de trenes eléctricos a escala, entre ellos un AVE o un Euromed.

La gracia de estos trenes a escala es que admiten pasajeros sentados sobre sus vagones. Por 1,5€ se puede recorrer este parque sobre uno de los trenes.

SCIENCE: SPECIAL RELATIVITY

I'm interested in physics, especially in theory of Relativity. As I think is quite difficult to understand it, I will try to explain here why, according to Special Relativity, the constancy of the speed of light leads to a new understanding of time and simultaneity.

In the following situation there is a train with an uniform movement and velocity v2. There are two observers. One of them is inside the train and the second one is outside the train. Suddenly a bulb is lighted inside the train and its lights go down. The green observer will see that the light arrives to the lower part of the window in the point A in t1, whereas the blue observer will see that the light touches the lower part of the window in the point B in t2. So the light travels a larger distance for the blue observer. The segment AB is the distance travelled by the train between the instants t1 and t2.

In the situation shown by the previous figure there are two observers. The blue observer is out of the train. The green observer is inside the train and the relative velocity between this two observers is v2. The first postulate of the special relativity theory states that the reference systems of this two observers are absolutely equivalent. So the phisical laws for each one have to be the same.

Applying the Pitagoras Theorem:

According to the second postulate of the special relativity, each observer must measure the same velocity of light, so c=c1=c2

The relation between the time measured by the two observers is called gamma factor:

This result is known as Lorentz transformation for time when one observer is at rest (there are another equations for the spatial coordinates).

For example, if the velocity of the train were half of speed of light, t2 would be 1.15 times t1, so time pass slower for the green observer. In fact, for the green observer the light travels a distance shorter than for the blue observer, so his time will have to pass slower in order to the velocity of light is the same for the two observers. This phenomenon is called time contraction.

BARCELONA: CASA DE LA ARDIACA

Next to the Roman city wall is the entrance to the house of the Archdeacon (Casa de l'Ardiaca o Casa del Arcediano) from the 12th century, the Gothic-Renaissance residence of the archdeacon, which in 1920 became the property of the City of Barcelona and houses since 1921 and the historical archive of Barcelona.

The overall structure of La Casa de la Ardiaca is of Flamboyant Gothic style, although the sculptural details contain elements from the Italian Renaissance

The Roman city wall can be seen inside the building on the ground floor. The most interesting elements of this medieval building is the outer part, the patio (courtyard), the terrace and the "Salon des les pinyes" (pineapple salon).

As the building is against the Roman wall ( which can be seen from the interior of the ground floor) there was not enough space to place the patio inside the building, according to the canons of that time, so it had to be built at the entrance.

The porticoed central courtyard of Casa de la Ardiaca has a Renaissance-style door with a triangular pediment and abundant reliefs. It was converted into a cloister in 16th century

In the courtyard, beside a large palm tree, there is the fountain which,  (60 days after Easter Sunday), is adorned by the traditional "l'ou com balla" (the dancing egg). In this picture the Roman city wall of Barcelona can be seen inside the courtyard on the right

So at the Corpus Christi day the fountain is decorated with flowers and fruits and an egg is laid under water jet. The egg will not fall, but turns and truns and dances with the water. This tradition is not only celebrated in Casa de l'Ardiaca, but also in other churches or buildings of Barcelona, with cloisters, or patio and fountain, like in the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Besides, Collserola is only 30min walk from the city center of Esplugues de Llobregat. Actually, there is a hill of Collserola, Sant Pere Màrtir, which belongs to this town and where you will be able to walk along La Carretera de les Aigües among the trees of this Natural Park and to enjoy fantastic views of Barcelona.
